THE FLOOD

Genesis 6:1-3 NIV, When men began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his days will be a hundred and twenty years.”

This time period is called the “Antediluvian Age”. It means before the FLOOD.

Genesis 6:4 NIV, The Nephilim (giants) were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

Nephilim literally means: FALLEN MAN; a bully or tyrant.

Genesis 6:5 NIV, The LORD saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.

Genesis 6:5 KJV, And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Genesis 6:6 NIV, The Lord was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain.

Genesis 6:6 KJV, And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

“Repented” in Strong’s Concordance is “nacham” meaning: to sigh, BREATHE strongly, by implication, to be sorry, to pity.

“Grieved” in Strong’s Concordance is “atsab” meaning: In a bad sense, to have pain or anger: to be displeased, grieve, hurt, be sorry.

Genesis 6:7-9 NIV, So the LORD said, “I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—men and animals, and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air—for I am grieved that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD. This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God.

Three-fold blessing of Noah:

  1. Noah found FAVOR (grace) with God.
  2. Noah was RIGHTEOUS and BLAMELESS.
  3. Noah WALKED with God.

Hebrews 11:5 NKJV, By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, and was not found because God had taken him; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

Genesis 6:10 NIV, Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth.

Jesus would be born through the blood-line of SHEM.

The ark was made of gopher wood. Today we would call that “cypress” wood.

God Provides Provision:

Isaiah 53:2 NIV, says “Christ is a root out of a dry ground, thus revealing his humanity.”

  1. What was the first surgery? IT WAS ADAM.
  2. What was the first court case? ADAM, EVE AND SATAN.
  3. What’s Noah’s ark? IT’S THE FIRST ZOO.

Hebrews 11:7 NIV, By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

Genesis 6:11-13 NIV, “Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence.God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.”

The Building of the Ark:

Genesis 6:14-16 NIV, So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high. Make a roof for it and finish the ark to within 18 inches of the top. Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks.

Genesis 6:14 KJV, Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

Genesis 6:14 NIV, says, “coat it with pitch inside and out”

Pitch is the same word in the Hebrew for ATONEMENT.

Pitch in the Hebrew is “Kaphar.” meaning: to cover specifically with bitumen, to appease, make an atonement for, cleanse, disannul, forgive, be merciful, pacify, pardon, purge away, put off, and reconcile.

Pitch in the Hebrew; root word is “Kopher.” meaning: to cover and pay redemptions price.

Romans 8:35 NIVtells us that, nothing can SEPARATE us from the love of Christ.

Three Levels to the Ark:

  1. FATHER
  2. SON
  3. HOLY GHOST

We’ve been saved from the PENALTY of sin.

We’ve been saved from the POWER of sin.

We will be saved from the PRESENCE of sin.

Genesis 7:1 NIV, The Lord then said to Noah, “go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation.”

John 10:9 NIV, “I am the door; by me if any man enter in he shall be saved.” Salvation of your soul and spirit.

Genesis 7:2-3 NIV, Take with you seven of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and two of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate, and also seven of every kind of bird, male and female, to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth.

Genesis 7:4-12 NIV, Seven days from now (from the day they entered) I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living creature I have made.” And Noah did all that the Lord commanded him. Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters came on the earth. And Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives entered the ark to escape the waters of the flood. Pairs of clean and unclean animals, of birds and of all creatures that move along the ground, male and female, came to Noah and entered the ark, as God had commanded Noah. And after the seven days the floodwaters came on the earth. In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, on the seventeenth day of the second month—on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.

Genesis 7:13-16 NIV, On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered the ark. They had with them every wild animal according to its kind, all livestock according to their kinds, every creature that moves along the ground according to its kind and every bird according to its kind, everything with wings. Pairs of all creatures that have the breath of life in them came to Noah and entered the ark. The animals going in were male and female of every living thing, as God had commanded Noah. Then the Lord shut him in.

2nd Corinthians 1:22 KJV, “Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the spirit in our hearts.

Ephesians 4:30 NIV, “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption”.

Colossians 2:3 NIV, In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge”.

Genesis 7:17 NIV, For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth

40-days are indicative of testing and cleansing.

Acts 1:3 NIV, After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

Genesis 7:18-24 NIV, The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the watersurface of the water. They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than twenty feet. Every living thing that moved on the earth perished—birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind. Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died. Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; men and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds of the air were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark. The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days.

Genesis 7:19 KJV, the waters prevailed but the ark was above the water.

TYPES and SHADOWS are a God pre-ordained representation wherein certain persons, events, things, and institutions of the Old Testament stand for some related & corresponding person, event, thing, and institution of the New Testament.

Genesis 8:1-14 NIV, But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded. Now the springs of the deep and the floodgates of the heavens had been closed, and the rain had stopped falling from the sky. The water receded steadily from the earth. At the end of the hundred and fifty days the water had gone down, and on the seventeenth day of the seventh month the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. The waters continued to recede until the tenth month, and on the first day of the tenth month the tops of the Mountains became visible. After forty days Noah opened the window he had made in the ark and sent out a raven, and it kept flying back and forth until the water had dried up from the earth. Then he sent out a dove to see if the water had receded from the surface of the ground. But the dove could find no place to set its feet because there was water over all the surface of the earth; so it returned to Noah in the ark. He reached out his hand and took the dove and brought it back to himself in the ark. He waited seven more days and again sent out the dove from the ark. When the dove returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf! Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth. He waited seven more days and sent the dove out again, but this time it did not return to him. By the first day of the first month of Noah’s six hundred and first year, the water had dried up from the earth. Noah then removed the covering from the ark and saw that the surface of the ground was dry. By the twenty-seventh day of the second month the earth was completely dry.

10 things God told Noah to do:

  1. BUILD an ark.
  2. Take ANIMALS into the ark.
  3. Take FOOD for all in the ark.
  4. ENTER the ark.
  5. LEAVE the ark.
  6. BRING animals out.
  7. DON’T eat blood.
  8. There was to be CAPITAL PUNISHMENT for murder.
  9. MULTIPLY and REPLENISH the earth.
  10. RULE the earth.
